The photographs in Peter Funch’s lastest series, Last Flight were taken at the moment of an explosion. Funch placed fifteen cameras at various points in the town of Atchison, Kansas in order to capture a portrait of the town during the implosion of Amelia Earhart Bridge, a recently condemned structure named for the town’s long disappeared favorite daughter. The book’s titles stems from the idea that this middle-American town is in a state of transition, between the A and B of life in America, just as the bridge is in a state of transition from a bridge to a ruin. The images do not pose questions or provide answers, rather they create an unstructured narrative for the viewer to piece together. They simply say: This happened then.
